Pulmonaria 'Blue Ensign'

Quick to establish and bloom, Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’ is a valuable garden plant. The big, deep, violate blue flowers open for months from around July to November. These early blooms are adored by hungry bees and colour starved gardeners alike!

It holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit so you know you can rely on it.

Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’ is a good, low growing border pant or ground cover. The more time the plants have had to establish, the earlier the flowers will open and the longer they will last. The handsome, narrow leaves are a feature in themselves.

Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’ is a good, low growing border pant or ground cover. Lovely in combination with Epimediums or Winter Roses. It has good shade tolerance, though with additional moisture will tolerate sun.

Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’ grows best in bright light or morning sun where the foliage will gradually form a nice, thick mat that no weed would dare grow through. Avoid the hot afternoon sun which can singe the foliage.

Pulmonaria is a woodland plant that appreciates humus rich, moist, well drained soil. In mild climates they will remain evergreen (they do for us in the Dandenong Ranges). In very cold climates, the foliage may go brown and black as winter frosts set in, but this can be easily removed to keep the plant tidy after the threat of frost and the new leaves will grow through in no time.

Pulmonaria are commonly known by many names, including Lungwort, Joseph and Mary, Soldiers and Sailors and Jerusalem Cowslip.
