Tayberry

Tayberries are a Raspberry/Blackberry hybrid with large, richly flavoured, tart berries. The fruit is a delight picked fresh, or cooked in jams and deserts. It produces prolific crops quite quickly (within 2 seasons), with a harvest time around January to February when they turn burgundy.

You won’t see Tayberries in your local supermarket, not because they aren’t delicious, but because they do not pack well. They are too delicate so you must grow them yourself, and you will be glad you did because they have a robust flavour. They ripen earlier than Loganberries.

The name Tayberry, is from the River Tay in Scotland.

Plant Tayberries to grow on a trellis. A couple of posts with a line strung between will suffice, but you can be as fancy as you like! Tie the stems loosely the line so they are not damaged by wind, and sit off the ground.

Tayberries grow well and are pretty easy care and the plants produce reliably for many years with flowers and fruit on second year growth. They do have thorns/prickles, so gloves should be worn when handling.

Plant Tayberries in full sun. A humus rich, well drained soil is ideal. Space 2m apart. Plant the cane quite shallow, around 10cm deep. Water in and keep moist when in flower and fruit. Add some mulch to help with water retention and weed reduction. They plenty of new growths you can pruning them back to about four or five stems per plant is ideal.
