Straw Foxglove

Narrow stems of creamy yellow bells open from early to mid summer. 10-50 of these 2cm inflorescence open along the stems and they are concentrated on just one side. From late spring to summer, the ethereal stems can last up to three weeks, a little longer in favourable conditions. As woodland plants they don’t mind a bit shade it makes a great buddy for Solomon’s Seal, Disporum or Winter Roses.

This rarity adds a nice element of vertical colour. Foxgloves, or digitalis look best grouped toward the middle, or back of a bed, where their tall blossoms will shine. Bees and other beneficial pollinators love these blooms.

Foxglove blooms start to open at the bottom of the stalks and gradually move upwards, providing a long show. The lush green, glossy leaves form a nice base and is around for much of the year. They are semi evergreen, going dormant in winter in cold climates.

Plant Foxgloves into well drained soil, water in and keep moist in active growth. Best grown in a morning sun position with protection from the hot afternoon rays. It is hardy to -15C.

This is a short lived perennial sets viable seed which can be left to naturalise, or collected for sowing – they turn a rich brown when they are ripe. They will flower from the seed in their second year. Cut back the first stem at the base to encourage more.
