Himalayan Dogwood
An ornamental evergreen with a stunning floral and fruit display. Creamy yellow flower like bracts cover the tree from late spring to early summer, as they mature they blush pink. The show doesn’t stop there; they are followed by gorgeous, big, strawberry coloured and shaped, ornamental fruits that last into autumn. The birds adore these plum sized fruits but they are too bitter for us.
This tree has compact growth with thick, mid green, leathery foliage. It has a rounded to broadly spreading habit and low canopy. It is a stand out specimen tree and works well in a woodland or shrubby border. The size can be left to roam or kept in check.
The fruits look good enough to eat, and you can, but they are bitter so best left for the birds. In really cold climates they may be semi deciduous, but generally in Australia it is evergreen. It has a moderate growth rate and will be with you a lifetime.
It is commonly known by many names; Himalayan Strawberry Tree, Evergreen Dogwood and Bentham’s Cornel.
