Helenium 'Red Jewel'
Enjoy sensational late season colour with this vigorous, upright, free flowering perennial. Cinnamon red and orange petals with flashes of gold at the petal tips, blooms to 5cm from around January to April. Long blooming and colour fast.
Helenium ‘Red Jewel’ holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit so you know it can be relied upon.
In beds and borders, plant in groups for an amazing colour show late summer to autumn. They look a treat in combination with ornamental grasses and perennials such as Salvias and Phlomis. Once the petals fall, the spent flower cones (seed heads) will remain ornamental into winter.
Keep the soil moist for best flowers and plant in a sunny position. The soil needs to be well drained and humus rich is ideal. In summer, remove spent flower heads to encourage even more blooms and keep them coming into autumn. The flowers tend to grow larger in areas where there are cool nights.
Good companions include Crocosmia, Dahlias such as 'Bishop of Llandaff', Monarda, ornamental grasses, Salvia or Alstroemerias. In ideal conditions, the colony will gradually increase year after year.
Enjoy the flowers of Heleniums in the garden or in a vase.
Heleniums are commonly known as Sneezeweed because their dried foliage was once a substitute for snuff. They aren’t a cause of hay fever!
