Hedgehog Lily

This small and fascinating bulbous plant is a gem for collectors and alpine gardeners. It produces two opposite, almost prostrate leaves that lie flat on the soil, their surfaces marked with many small, blister-like pustules which give a tactile, sculptural quality. From between these leaves emerges a compact, almost stalkless inflorescence in winter (Southern Hemisphere), composed of many slender filaments and small flowers in creamy white, pale pink or greenish tones.

Reaching only about 8–10 cm in height and spreading roughly the same, it’s ideally suited to rock gardens, alpine troughs, or pots where its modest size will be appreciated.

It is a winter grower (active in the cooler season) and summer-dormant, adapted to climates with dry summers and winter moisture.

It prefers full sun (or bright exposure) and well-drained, gritty soils, ideally protected from heavy rain and frost

In cultivation, moderate watering during the growing season and a drier dormant period help maintain health.

With its textured foliage and unusual, brush-like flowers, this plant adds subtle intrigue to alpine and succulent collections. Its small scale and quiet flowering habit reward close observation, making it a captivating specimen for those who appreciate botanical delicacy.
