Grape Hyacinth 'Big Smile'
At around twice the size of the common Muscari, this is sure to put a smile on your face. The upright flower stems have long racemes of true blue florets (along around 10cm of the stem). The dark buds turn to bright blue as they open.
The leaves of Muscari ‘Big Smile’ are thick and upright, finishing just below the proud blooms, it emerges late autumn to winter, before the flowers and fades soon after.
Grape Hyacinths or Muscari are great for rockeries, pots, nooks and crannies, along pathways, drifts, grass plantings or at the front of beds. The flowers open late winter to early spring and look brilliant combined with Miniature Daffodils, Crocus or Dwarf Iris.
Plant Grape Hyacinths into well drained soil, humus rich soil, they will manage in poor soils with good drainage. Water them in, then natural rainfall should take care of the rest, you will only need to water them if they dry out during active growth.
Grape Hyacinth bulbs are best left to naturalise, where they will multiply to form nice clumps. By adding some general purpose fertiliser as the flowers are forming you will ensure good growth in the following season.
