Cornus 'Westonbirt'
In winter there is a glorious thicket of rich, red stems to warm you up through the cold days. In spring, the new green leaves grow out, and are soon joined by cymes of white flowers. In late summer the flowers turn to ornamental white fruits. In autumn the leaves turn red and orange. Then the fun begins again.
So that is it, beauty all year round! Cornus 'Westonbirt' shrubs look amazing planted in clumps. It is quick to establish and easy to care for with good longevity. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit so you know it has been put through its paces.
They grow best in humus rich, moist, well drained soils in a sunny spot (at least six hours). Cornus 'Westonbirt' aren't too fussy but you will get better colour from the stems in these conditions.
This plant is a cultivar of the old favourite, Cornus alba 'Sibirica’, commonly known as Siberian Dogwood, it has been grown since the 1830’s.
The botanical name, Cornus, is termed for the bark, from the Latin, cornu, which means hard and bony.
